Protect from computer virusesKey Points about Antivirus Protection

The subject of Antivirus is a very broad one, and one that must be dealt with when speaking of computers. If you are using a Microsoft Operating System, there are those of you who do use Antivirus and those that will soon use it to clean their infected systems. Below is a short-list of key factors in keeping your system Virus-free.

1. Install a reputable Antivirus Software program with the following features:

  • Real-Time Scanning
  • Continual definition updates
  • Scheduled Full-System Scans
  • Small footprint (uses few system resources)

2. Update your Antivirus by ensuring the softwares automatic update capability is working

3. Allow it to scan your system during it's scheduled scan. It is tempting to cancel the scan, thinking "I know I don't have a virus", but many times you will not notice any signs that a virus has infected your system. At the least, pause the scan until a more convienient time. This will ensure that you do scan the system fully.

4. Be sure that the Real-Time scanning is enabled. There is a small performance reduction with real-time scanning enabled, yet the speed loss is much less than an infection will cause. You may be able to disable unused features, such as spam filtering, or link filtering. The most effective way to remediate the performance loss is to add system memory and keep all features enabled.

5. Upgrade your Antivirus to the latest version of the software. This is different than updating your virus definitions and on many applications must be done manually. It is best to install an application that upgrades automatically, or at least notifies you of upgrades needed.

6. Patch your Operating System and installed applications. This is not directly related to Antivirus, but is equally important in to the security of your systems. Run Windows Update, better yet, upgrade to Microsoft Update, to ensure you ahave the latest critical patches from Microsoft. You should also check your software vendors websites for patches and updates to your software. You may be familiar with Java Update notifications. Many people ignore these updates, but most of these updates acually fix security holes in the Java platform. It is important to keep your systems and applications patched.
